Instructions

Thread the machine with selected thread color and matching bobbin.

Hoop 1 layer of Ultra Clean and Tear TearAway in the appropriate size hoop for the design.

Load the design.

Stitch Machine Step 1, Placement Line.

Remove the hoop from the machine but not the project from the hoop.

Fill It Up Quilting Table Runner 4

Turn the hoop over and place the fabric, right side up, completely covering the placement stitch.

Carefully tape to secure. Avoid pushing too hard on the stabilizer to prevent it from dislodging from the hoop.

Alternate Method: Spray the wrong sides of the back block pieces with temporary spray adhesive.

Turn the hoop right side up and position the batting and front fabric, right side up, completely covering the placement stitch.

Return the hoop to the machine, being careful to keep the back fabric in position.

Stitch Machine Step 2, Fabric Tackdown.

Note: This stitch will also function as the cutting guide when the block is complete. If it is difficult to see against the fabric, use a color with higher contrast. This stitch will not show in the final quilt.

Tip: To avoid knots on the reverse side of the block, pull the bottom thread to the top and hold both ends until a few stitches have stitched.

Stitch Machine Step 3, Linework.

After a few stitches have stitched, pause the machine, and trim the thread tails.

Continue stitching the remainder of the design.

Remove the project from the hoop. Gently tear away excess stabilizer.

Using the Tackdown stitch as a guide, trim the block 1/4” outside the stitch.

Repeat these embroidery steps for all the blocks. You will make 8 of each block size.

The blocks are joined together with a double-sided sashing technique to create the table runner.

Tip: A walking foot or dual-feed foot is highly recommended for attaching the sashing strips to the blocks.

Helpful Hint: Cut the sashing strips 1 inch longer than the side of the blocks they are joining (Example: 4 in. side gets a 5 in. sashing strip). Then trim away excess sashing after top stitching.

Sandwich the block on the connecting side with the sashing strips, right sides toward the block.

Align the raw edges. Pin if desired.

Stitch the sashing pieces to the block with a 1/2” seam allowance.

Press the front sashing up over the seam allowance. Leave the back sashing against the quilt block.

Place the adjacent block, right sides together, over the sashing on the front side of the first block as shown.

Align raw edges and pin if desired.

Stitch the adjacent block to the sashing with a 1/2” seam allowance.

Open the blocks, right side up to reveal the front sashing.

Turn the blocks wrong side up. Press.

The two seam allowances should meet in the center without overlapping.

If there is a gap between the seam allowances, re-stitch the seam on the side that looks smaller until they do match. No need to un-sew the first stitching.

If the seam allowances overlap ever-so-slightly, carefully clip a little off the edge of one side until they fit or restitch the seam.

With the back side up, fold the back sashing away from the quilt block. Press.

Fold the raw edge under until it just covers the sashing seam on the second block. Press.

Secure the folded edge with a water-soluble glue stick, or 1/4-1/2” strip of OESD SoftWeb.

Make sure the edges of the blocks are even.

On the front of the blocks, use an edge stitch foot and top stitch 1/8” onto the sashing on both sides.

Trim excess sashing to the edge of the blocks.

Continue this sashing technique to join all the 4 x 4 in. blocks to the 4 x 2 in. blocks creating 4 x 6 in. units, and all the 8 x 4 in. blocks to the 8 x 2 in. blocks creating 8 x 6 in. units.

Continue this sashing technique to join all the 4 x 6 in. units to 8 x 6 in. units creating 12 x 6 in. sections.

You will now have 8 of these 12 x 6 in. sections.

Continue this sashing technique to join all the 12 x 6 in. in your selected layout.

Bind as desired.

Note: Stitch the binding to the front of the quilt with a scant 1/2” seam allowance to cover the Fabric Tackdown stitches of the blocks.

Your Fill It Up Quilting Table Runner is complete and ready. ENJOY!
